Discussion #1 – Find Your Interview Partner

This week we are in the beginning steps of conducting an Informational Interview with one of your classmates. Traditionally, you would conduct an informational interview as part of the job search process. The goal is to connect with already-established professionals in your field to learn.

Columbia University lays out three important goals in the informational interview process:

  • Contacting people you know or want to meet to gather information about career paths, industries, or organizations
  • Building authentic relationships with individuals to help you make informed decisions about your career exploration and internship or job search
  • Asking individuals who you initially connect with for additional relevant contacts to expand your network

One of the ways you may connect with professionals is virtual. Therefore, it is important to become more comfortable having successful conversations with more advanced professionals in an online setting. For this speech assignment, you will practice your informational interview techniques with one of your classmates.
